Wild Idea for Week of Running

Wild Idea for Week of Running

Wilderness guide Piotr Babis is about to embark on a week of running…if that doesn’t sound newsworthy, then read on. He completing one Tassie multi day walk each day, for seven days!

You’re running seven of Tassie’s most challenging bushwalking tracks – one a day for seven days. Why? Not all of them are necessarily the most challenging. I picked various trails around Tassie that are most iconic, beautiful and renowned. There are a few different reasons – it is hard to define all of them. To start with, I genuinely love the outdoors and it seems like a fun way to spend a week! I’m not sure how much longer I will be living in Tasmania and linking all those trails would be a great tribute to this Island I have been calling home. I feel like having a ‘crazy’ goal adds a lot of excitement and motivation to my life. It will also be an attempt to find my breaking point, a race against my mind and body. Every physical or emotional struggle makes you a stronger person. Apart from my personal reasons this project is a fundraiser for Westpac Rescue Helicopter Tasmania and hopefully will bring the community together to support this great cause!

Which trails are you running? Which are you most looking forward to? And most nervous about? South Coast Track, Federation Peak, Western Arthurs, Frenchmans Cap, Overland Track, Three Capes and Freycinet Peninsula Circuit. Each of them will be a great adventure, but I am really looking forward to Federation Peak – ‘Australia’s only real mountain’. At the same time I’m the most nervous about this track – it’s notorious for the muddy approach and scary summit scramble.

How much planning goes into that and what do you need to be mindful of? Lots! The tracks are spread around Tasmania. There is lots of driving involved. The South Coast track requires a flight, and some of the tracks are point to point which requires additional support. The key is to have a great support crew. All the planning is around Federation Peak and we are hoping for good weather!

How are you planning on winding down and recharging each night? There will be very little time for that unfortunately. I’m hoping to get as much sleep (anywhere and everywhere) and as many calories in as possible. If there is a time, I will try some gentle soft tissue rolling or cold water swim.

You’re raising money for Westpac Rescue Helicopter Tasmania – why did you choose them? Being an outdoor enthusiast it’s great to know we can get help if things go wrong out in the wilderness. I’m hoping to never use their services, but I would like to give back to the community. They’re an amazing organization and have helped me a lot with this project. Fundraising for Westpac Rescue Helicopter Tasmania is an additional motivator for me.

What’s your day job? I’m a Wilderness Guide for the Tasmanian Walking Company. I mostly work on the Overland Track.

How can our readers support you? I would love it if you would support this project by making a donation to Westpac Rescue Helicopter Tasmania. You can follow along my journey via my website, Facebook page and GoFundMe Page. www.pbabis.com/index.php/impossible7/.

Piotr is set to commence his run on 16 November.

Just when you think your cousins are alright. NZ Opposition Leader Judith Collins took aim at Tassie during her recent (unsuccessful) campaign, calling us Australia’s “poor cousin.” She also seems worried about us nabbing tech businesses, “It’s a lovely part of the world but do you necessarily want to go there with your high- tech business? Possibly not,” she said. We beg to differ!
