NEWS: Rogue Urchin Goes West
by Stephanie Williams

A single invasive sea urchin has been spotted off the remote southwest coast, marking the most westerly sighting of the species in Tasmania. The Longspined sea urchin has formed dense populations along parts of the east coast, seriously damaging marine landscapes and impacting local abalone and rock lobster fisheries. This rogue urchin was found between Port Davey and Low Rocky Point. Dr John Keane, a senior research fellow at the University of Tasmania’s Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) said sightings were increasing across southern reefs: “While a single individual is not a problem, this sighting highlights the extent of the threat if our waters continue to warm.” The state government’s incentivized harvest program has encouraged commercial divers to remove millions of the urchins from coastal waters since 2018, but more remote areas are much harder to work in.
