NEWS: New Little Penguin Tunnels
by James Marsten

In one positive piece of news for the world’s wild birds, Burnie’s little penguins now have access to a larger habitat area thanks to the opening of nine new purpose-built tunnels beneath the Coastal Pathway. The tunnels connect the beach to a former car park that is now home to hundreds of native plants, penguin-friendly amber lighting and bordered by 1.2 metre fences. It is all part of the University of Tasmania’s Cradle Coast campus move to West Park, and the area will be monitored to find out how the penguins – the world’s smallest – use the space.
