NEWS: Eligibility Changes For LGBTIQA + Blood Donors
by Stephanie Williams

Rodney Croome, Tasmanian LGBTIQA+ rights activist and academic, gave blood for the first time in his life following recent changes to Australian Red Cross Lifeblood rules about who can donate. Croome posted a joy-filled photo of him in the blood donor chair, saying: “I donated today because I want to help other Australians in need, but also because I want to encourage other gay, bi and trans Australians to donate. I know some gay men my age are wary about donation. They might have been turned away in the past, or feel resentment about the old ban. I want my donation to encourage newly-eligible donors to put all that behind us, roll up our sleeves and give the gift of life.” The change is expected to lead to about 20,000 extra blood donations across a year.
