NEWS: Can You Help Maxine?
by Stephanie Williams

Hello, After much searching I have found an article in your magazine about the Wapping district in Hobart (The Wapping That Was, The Hobart Magazine, February, 2020). I was trying to find information about an area my mother took me to when I was a child. I am eighty-four now and I have a strong memory of my mother taking me to what I remember as a shanty town between Liverpool and Collins Street. I thought it was near Molle Street, but as I was only about seven or eight (late 1940’s) at the time, maybe my memory is wrong. I can remember rough dwellings made out of corrugated iron and scrap timber. Was there such an area up near Molle Street, or would it have been in the Wapping area further down? None of the photographs in your article resemble the shacks in my memory. Are there any Hobart historians who would be able to tell me more?
Regards, Maxine
Editor’s Note: Over to you, Hobart. Can anyone shed light on Wapping and if it stretched to Molle Street? Please email editor@thehobartmagazine.com.au if you have any information we can pass on.
