NEWS: Calamari Crisis?
by James Marsten

With stocks of calamari now classified as depleted in the south east waters and depleting in the north, scientists and fishers are working together to try to help. The University of Tasmania’s Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) will lead a three-year research project tracking what drives the squid to spawn and when. Divers will count calamari eggs on the seafloor, and underwater cameras will be combined with AI trained to pick out calamari egg clusters. There will be monthly surveys at sites in the north east, north west and south east from July. Findings are expected to determine decisions on fishing closure time periods.
