NEWS: Little Trees, Big Weekend
by James Marten

If you’ve ever stopped to admire a beautifully shaped bonsai and wondered how on earth someone does that, this is your chance to find out. Talented Tasmanian bonsai artists are bringing their work to the Wrest Point Boardwalk on 2-3 May, with the exhibition open to the public from 10am to 5pm each day. A $5 entry gets you into the exhibition and the traders area, where you can browse and buy bonsai, handmade pots and equipment.
And if bonsai is already your thing, block out the whole long weekend. The Bonsai Society of Southern Tasmania is hosting the 38th Australian National Bonsai Convention at the Wrest Point Conference Centre from 1-4 May — a decade on from the last time Tassie welcomed the national bonsai community to our shores. This year’s theme, Southern Bonsai, speaks to our remarkable flora – from alpine landscapes to rare and unusual native species – making Tasmania a genuinely inspiring place for bonsai enthusiasts. International demonstrator Matt Reel travels from Oregon, USA, joined by Hugh Grant from the Blue Mountains, Queenslander Sean Hartley, and local artist Jarryd Bailey. Whether you’re a seasoned practitioner or a curious beginner, there’s plenty to take in. More info at www.aabcconvention2026.square.site.
